web design principles

When designing your site, Frilly Lizard will have regard to a number of web design principles with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of your site, including:

  • who your primary audience is,
  • the purpose and location of your site,
  • style and level of web technology which is best suited to your site’s purpose,
  • resolution issues such as screen types and sizes upon which your site is most likely to be accessed,
  • the content and the types of content (for example, text, graphics (including appropriate choices of graphics formats), video, sound and forms) to be including in your site,
  • appropriate choices of background and text colours, particularly with regard to providing sufficient colour contrast, to enhance the user’s understanding of the content on your site, and
  • consistency, clarity and user friendliness throughout your site.

web standards

The web standards which Frilly Lizard will design your website in compliance with are the recommendations from the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) for XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

web accessibility guidelines

Frilly Lizard will be informed by, and inform you about, the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) in the design of your website.

WCAG 2.0 relies on four principles in making web content accessible to people with disabilities, the content has to be: perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.

In enhancing:

  • how perceivable your website is to people with disabilities, Frilly Lizard will provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, Braille, speech, symbols or simpler language, will provide alternatives for time-based media, will create content that can be presented in different ways (for example simpler layout) without losing information or structure, and will make it easier for users to see and hear content including separating foreground from background,
  • how operable your website is to people with disabilities, Frilly Lizard will make all functionality available from a keyboard, will provide users enough time to read and use content, will not design content in a way that is known to cause seizures, and will provide ways to help users navigate, find content and determine where they are,
  • how understandable your website is to people with disabilities, Frilly Lizard will make content readable and understandable, will make web pages appear and operate in predictable ways, and will help users avoid and correct mistakes, and
  • how robust your website is, Frilly Lizard will maximize compatibility with current and future user agents, including assistive technologies.
